As you can see, visiting Santa did not go well this year. In fact, it was even worse than last year! She wouldn't even sit by herself. It all turned out OK though when she got her reindeer hat when she was done.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This year we celebrated her birthday with Kyle's parents since we were there for Thanksgiving. I guess our Thanksgivings from now on will include apple pie, pumpkin pie, and birthday cake!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Anna celebrated with a trip to Rockford's Discovery Center Museum, lunch, a visit to the fire station, cake, and presents. I highly recommend the museum. There was a lot for toddlers to do. Here are some pictures:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It is hard to believe that Anna is two already. Sure, I miss my roly-poly baby sometimes, but it is nice to watch her be more independent, have her own opinions, and try to do stuff on her own. I love having a real conversation with my daughter. I also like it when she says stuff like, "I like your sweater Mommy."

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">D.C. doesn't get a lot of snow each winter, at least not while I have lived here. So, when we got a couple of inches yesterday, I was very excited to take Anna outside. She was not as excited. She kept complaining she was cold and wanted to go inside, even though I told her playing in the snow was fun. And, for the record, it was not even cold outside. I kept taking pictures, hoping she would have some fun.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Halloween was so much fun last night! I wasn't sure how Anna would do, but she did great. We walked around our little neighborhood and she went up to every house that was giving out candy. She only took one candy from each bucket and even said thank you (most times). She was so cute and so excited. She spent the rest of the evening playing on the street with our neighbor, Connor. She really likes Conner. It's funny because our day care says she doesn't like playing with other kids and really hates it when they get in her space. That is not the case when she plays with Connor. She follows him around, does whatever he does, and laughs and laughs. She doesn't even care when he gets in her space either. Weird.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I have been struggling to write a post about our trip to Maine and New Hampshire, but I am not sure why. We had a great time! Maybe it is because I am still sad to be back home, where the leaves are still green and traffic is a mess and all I hear are sirens instead of the sound of the ocean. Even Old Town Alexandria's Halloween decorations are not nearly as cute as Ogunquit's. Oh well, at least I have some pictures to remember the trip.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We flew into Manchester, New Hampshire on Friday. It was a quick flight, minus the 60 minutes sitting on the runway. We got our cheap rental car and we were off to Portsmouth, NH. We were meeting our friends who were already there, enjoying the first of many, many beers.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I really like traveling with Heidi and Evan. One, they love Anna. They even babysat one night so Kyle and I could go out to dinner. Two, they have been to Maine many times, so they planned and navigated and organized our visit (with our input of course). We basically had to just show up and enjoy the ride. Three, they are super nice, funny, and easy going, which is why we are actually friends in the first place.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">After walking through Portsmouth, we headed north to Maine. We stopped for groceries, just the essentials (milk, beer, pumpkin bagels, beer, apple cider, grapes, beer...) and made our way to the townhome we rented in Ogunquit. The home worked out perfectly. We were about 1/4 mile from the beach and about 1 mile to town. Anna had her own bedroom and she loved the jacuzzi tub. The house was not fancy, but it had everything we needed and was very comfortable.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Ogunquit has to be one of the cutest towns ever. Their downtown has restaurants and shops, there are 3 miles of beach <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">and <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">a beautiful walk along the coast, and the homes come in all shapes and sizes. There is also a playhouse and a couple of museums but we didn't visit those. I would definitely stay in this town again. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Everything we did was within an hours drive.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We woke up each morning and walked to the beach with Anna. It was chilly but she didn't mind. We watched the birds and the waves, picked up rocks, and played in the sand. I could start everyday with a walk on the beach. We usually visited the beach every afternoon too, to soak up as much fresh air as possible.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Saturday we headed back to Portsmouth to visit their farmer's market and to walk around downtown a bit more. Their farmer's market has beer! On the way back to Maine we visited Stonewall Kitchen. I love this store but it was very, very crowded. We also stopped by Pie in the Sky Bakery for the best blueberry pie I have ever had. It was a little expensive but totally worth it. We then watched LSU beat Florida, and Heidi and I did some shopping that night.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Sunday we drove north to Freeport, Maine to shop at the 24-hour L.L. Bean. Anna loved this store. You could try out all of the chairs and tents, see stuffed moose, and run around the kids play area for hours. After lunch, we stopped at Kennebunkport, Maine. It was a cute town near the water that was fun to explore. We then made our way back to Ogunquit and went for a long walk along the Marginal Way.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Monday was Portland day. Everyone (except Anna and I) was scheduled to tour Allagash Brewery that afternoon, so we went early to explore the city. I was not super impressed with Portland but there were some cute shops and we had a great lunch at In'finiti Fermentation and Distillation. Once the group was off to their tour, Anna and I headed to Portland Head Light. It was beautiful. This is what comes to mind when I think of Maine and Anna and I could have stayed there all day. To end the day, Kyle and I went to dinner at Barnacle Billy's and Anna went with Heidi to "make cake" with sand at the beach. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I am not a fan of lobster, but I am a fan of rum punch and they had the best I've had in a long time.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Tuesday was left for packing, cleaning, and heading home. We left a bit early for the airport to visit one more lighthouse. Nubble Light was just as cute and quintessential Maine as Portland Head Light. I could have stayed there all day too, except it was cold and windy, and we had a plane to catch.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I loved New Hampshire and Maine. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I would love to go back. I could go back just spend a whole day shopping at the antique shops and outlets we passed by.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My neighbor and
I were talking, her in-laws live in Maine, and she said it perfectly
"It is just a better way of life up there." I have to totally agree, except maybe not in winter.

First up, Friday was spent getting my haircut and doing some shopping. Boring. Well, except I may have actually found a hairdresser that I want to go back to. It only took 3.5 years. I shouldn't jinx it just yet though.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Next up, Saturday morning was spend visiting Washington Monument State Park, out in Maryland, NOT DC. The park was beautiful and it was attached to the Appalachian Trail, so we did a little hiking as well. Anna can only handle about an hour in her backpack, and that is all about all we can handle too. She is getting heavy. Riley could have gone all day.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We let Anna run around on the playground afterwards. She was really good at climbing the stairs and going down the slide herself, up until some other kids joined us. Then, there were tears because they were playing on Anna's slide. We learned about taking turns, went down the slide a few times more, and hit the road.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Sunday we had our usual met-up with Erin and family for our run and breakfast, except, this time we managed to run 3.51 miles, which might be our longest yet. We also managed to score the BIG table at Open City. It was amazing and everything I thought it would be. Sean said it best, "I think I should order more food because I have the table space." After Anna took a marathon 3-hour nap, we headed to Del Ray to catch the Halloween Parade. It was really cute and Anna loved waving hello to everyone.
That's about all there is to mention about life lately in our house. Then, I saw <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">my sister's post<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> today, so I thought I would steal her idea and mention a little more.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 1: Head into work - sign the paperwork - head home from work. There may have been some tears. I am totally disappointed in our government that my job is not important enough to keep going. (I'm not talking about being 'essential'. I know that what I do is not as important as what others do.) Feeling a bit worthless. I am also totally disappointed in myself. We did not have to move to an area where it takes us two incomes to pay our bills, but we did. Take a nap - get up and dust off - clean the house - find a green crayon melted in the dryer and almost lose it again.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 2: Paint - paint - paint. I still have a bunch of white paint for the hallways, so I did what I could in a day. Threaten Kyle that if he dares to go out to lunch this week, he will have to find a new home.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 3: Take care of sick Anna. At least I am important at home. Oh, also got Anna her first haircut!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 4: Play date with Adelaide! Go to the park - play at the house - teach Anna how to share (she's still working on it).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 5: Take why-is-my-eye-now-red-and-swollen Anna to the doctor - work on school work. I'm pretty much over being angry. (Side note: If I hear one more thing about how horrible it is that the National Parks are closed, I'm going to scream. This still makes me angry. I love our parks, I'm sorry for those that live on Federal land, I'm sorry for those that had vacation plans, but I AM NOT GETTING PAID! How is that not a bigger story? (not about me personally, but about the 800,000 of us not getting paid and about the 1,000s of others working while their pay is delayed)) I have this constant uneasy feeling, but I'm trying to concentrate on doing stuff that makes my day worthwhile. I don't watch the news, Facebook drives me insane, and I never even think about setting an alarm for the next day. Hope I'll get a phone call when we do get back to work.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 6: More school work - pack for upcoming trip to Maine - run to Target for a few things - buy much needed flats from Target - wear them to school - find that they are super uncomfortable - maybe cried on the way home about spending the $16 on said shoes - stay up way too late talking with Kyle about how stressful things at work are for him. He has the same uneasy feeling.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 7: More school work - more painting - watch Gossip Girl Season 6 (it was terrible) - try at-home waxing...
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 8: Clean the house (again!) - lunch with a co-worker/friend (I told Kyle he could go out to eat too) - Pay only the minimum on a credit card for the first time in years - more school work. I really do have a lot of school work.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Day 9 (tomorrow): Head to Maine! We planned this trip months ago, and since the lodging, flights, and car rental are paid off, we are going. It will be nice to explore a new place, but with three out of the four of us going (excluding Anna) furloughed, it should be interesting.Katyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06007099113629716036noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595932406272295317.post-18867836386782990882013-09-16T04:26:00.001-07:002013-09-16T04:26:13.051-07:00Things My Daughter Says<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Anna: squeeze. squeeze. squeeze <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">(while squeezing my boob, while in the line at the grocery store)
Here are some words that come to mind when I think about the South:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">palm trees

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">grand homes

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">heat

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">humidity

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">seersucker, fancy dresses, and bow ties

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">cockroaches

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">college football

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It had been a while since we ventured to a true southern city and since my brother-in-law had work to do in Charleston, we thought we would tag along. I had never been there and it was a pretty easy drive from DC, although there is nothing between here and there except one really scary stop.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We stayed at The Mills House by Wyndham and I highly recommend it. The rooms are a little small, but the location is great, the lobby is perfect for enjoying lunch while your toddler runs around, and the pool was perfect.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We mainly explored the city by foot. We shopped on King Street, played in the fountain at Marion Square, and wandered through White Point Garden. We also visited the aquarium. Can we talk about the homes for a minute? Holy crap they were beautiful. I loved their color, the front porches, the flower baskets. They all seemed huge, and from what I could tell, they were all very expensive.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My first favorite thing about this trip was the beach. We went to Sullivan's Island one morning <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">and it ended up being the perfect beach for the little ones. The water was really shallow and calm (you had to walk really far out to even be standing in water waist deep), so Anna and Adelaide could just sit and play without us worrying about them being swallowed up by the ocean, stung by jellyfish, bitten by a shark, etc. The sand was soft and the beach was huge.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My second favorite part of the trip was the food. We ordered food to-go mostly (it is just easier with Anna, trust me) but it gave us a chance to eat fantastic food without having to wait forever in line. My favorite was Poogan's Porch, followed closely by Magnolia's for dinner and Fast and French for breakfast. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We did have a hard time finding dessert though. There are plenty of candy shops but not a lot of bakeries, and for two girls with a huge sweet tooth, this can be a problem. One night we did find some really good chocolate.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Before we knew it, it was time to set the alarm for 3am and make the drive back to DC. It was a really fun trip with my really fun family.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Poor Anna is having a rough time. In the past week and a half we have been to our doctor twice, the ER, and an emergency clinic. She has had three rounds of steroids, two rounds on the nebulizer, an antibiotic, and eye drops.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I just want to make it to the pool again before the summer is over.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Newsroom is officially my new favorite show. Sadly we don't have HBO, so now I have to wait forever for Netflix to send Season 2.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Netflix is sending Girls and Homeland shortly, so life will go on.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We are in super-saver mode right now, trying to get our savings account back up to where it needs to be. We sold some stuff on ebay and craigslist, and have really cut back on extra purchases. We have actually been doing really well these past few weeks, but we will see how things go when (see first bullet) our medical bills arrive.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Anna saying the word 'hurt' is the saddest thing ever.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I bought this dress at a consignment shop for $10 (before super-saver mode). Super excited.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">School starts in two weeks!! It should be my last year of classes. Again, super excited.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Her hugs. They don't come often but when they do, they are fantastic. She puts her whole body into that squeeze.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Her independence. She still sticks to our sides most hours of each day but every now and then she does little things by herself. For example, when we get to day care the first thing we do is wash her hands. Then, she picks up the step-stool and carries it over to the drinking fountain. She climbs up and gets herself a drink, and if I get anywhere near her, she points in the other direction and says, "Move! Move!".

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">She loves her cousin. She asks for Adelaide every morning and afternoon at day care, and waits for Adelaide to arrive after our Sunday runs. Adelaide puts the biggest smile on Anna's face. I hope, someday, Anna can return the favor.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">She is still eating her fruits and vegatables (and desserts) pretty well.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">She actually sat and watched Elmo for 15 whole minutes!

Kyle's parents came to visit and we kept busy at the zoo, at the outlet mall, and, of course, at the pool.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Katy: What are going to get?
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Kyle: The lamb burger.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Katy: You are going to eat a baby sheep!?!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Kyle: Yes. It's so tender because they're so tiny.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Kyle: Well, they don't call it a sheep burger.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So, I think Anna is making me fat.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Well, there a lot of reasons why I am gaining weight right now, but let's concentrate on the ones I can blame Anna for. Now that she is eating, it is tough to know what to order her when we go out to eat. If she can eat some of what I order, then I share, no big deal. If she cannot eat, or will not eat, what I order than I usually order her something off the kid's menu. Then, she eats maybe four bites, and I end up eating the rest. This is my problem- not only do I eat my dinner, but I end up eating hers too. (I also had to eat the rest of her birthday cake last weekend too.)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So, what do I do?
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">- Do not eat her food (nope, cannot do it, I am way too cheap to see that food go to waste)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">- Bring it home (sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">- I could order something small and just plan on eating the rest of her meal too (this would work, but then I would be stuck eating chicken nuggets or spaghetti for every meal - boo)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">- Not go out to eat (hmmm...)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I think it will be easier when she gets older and actually eats an entire kids meal. I remember my Dad always eating everything we didn't but Kyle can't eat most of the stuff Anna wants to.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">OK, I am off to do 25 jumping jacks every time I think about the sandwich and grilled cheese (and birthday cake) I ate the other day for lunch. Katyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06007099113629716036noreply@blogger.com1
